Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
25th July 2023

As always, disorganised, slow, confusing and could be so much better. No clear timeframe and it appears nothing happens unless you keep chasing. Next steps and clear timescales make life much easier. If I know I am waiting 4 hours that is fine, if I know. But it just doesn’t seem to happen.

Suggested improvements
Communicate. Be honest. Own the patient.

Communication was extremely poor. Feeling very unwell was also left stressed not knowing what was happening to me . Very poor experience has left me feeling very apprehensive and frightened about coming to A&E again .

Suggested improvements
Communicate with patients and show some compassion. We are there because we are feeling very ill ,frightened and need some reassurance and a friendly approach would help. Lack of communication between staff in UTC ,I was given conflicting information which prolonged my agony and diagnosis,I should have been sent straight to Emergency.

Staff member in Majors B very rude and unhelpful. I was only there as a referral from my GP for a CT scan. I was given fluids via drip no one informed me if you moved your arm the drip stops working, I was therefore on the drip for hours longer than I needed to be!!! By 2100hrs they informed me that I wasn’t on the list for a scan. What a disgusting way to treat a patient!!!

Suggested improvements
Keep patients informed on what’s happening, don’t assume they know not to move their arm when having a drip. Don’t be rude!!!

Waited just under 12 hours to be admitted and only found out that was the plan after asking. I am an outpatient at the hospital (colitis) and although the initial triage was good the wait and infomation after wasn't.

Suggested improvements
Doctors could have told me what was going to happen next, what where the indications from blood tests/stool samples. Nurses didnt tell me I was being admitted.

Impossible to get timescales for anything. Took 13.5 hours in total, including almost 3 hours just to have my Obs taken when I arrived. All the staff were pleasant and helpful, but it's infuriating to not be able to move from your seat in case you are called in 5 minutes or 5 hours.

Suggested improvements
Either give the staff more visibility of wait times and position in the queue, or ideally a way to display the current queue position at the various triage points on screens, i.e. by admission ID or similar.

I was in the hospital for quite a few hours and had to travel to various departments and I was in alot of pain, walking was very difficult. However despite that every member of staff that i spoke to or was handled by was just so lovely. Genuinely lovely, kind compassionate people and for that I am forever grateful

Suggested improvements
Maybe offered me a porter and wheelchair would have been better considering the pain i was in and the amount of walking i had to do.
